Fiber thread stitch paper textiles

The ease in which connections can be made zinein this golden age of the internet is mind boggling. Serendipity and coincidences have made me aware of the generous nature of Sue Bleiweiss. She is a tireless creator: one of those fairies or gnomes that makes hand made creations appear overnight. Really, she’s amazing, I don’t think she sleeps.

I’ve been slow in adding her web-site to my favorites due to being overwhelmed by the maze of information she imparts. Sue is generous with techniques and resources, has free tutorials and projects, offers on-line classes and is the publisher of the mixed media zine Fiber & Stitch. Whew, I’m exhausted just talking about her. Looking to expand your arena of mixed media? love books? Check this energizer bunny out.

the goddesses wish to see you

Faces of Reason

The face of your own personal goddess, your alter ego, the form your thoughts take in the 5th dimension, the mask we wear in public. Some of these lucky gals have gone into thoughtful new homes, where their meanings will change as their companions moods and dreams change.

TT and I enjoy when the finished collage cards come together, but we realize that many artists out there need to fulfill their own goddesses destinies. Because of the popularity of the faces, we will be offering the ceramic button faces singularly as well as on finished mixed media collages. They hope to see you at the Long Beach International Quilt Festival in July. See the events page for information.  love.

Make time

make-time

TOO much to say about this one, and of course everyone knows the importance of making time for themselves, or for creating. Here is how I negotiate with myself: I wish to spend hours painting papers, or sewing painted fabrics with no particular finished project in mind. I have housekeeping to do. Simple, for every 20 minutes of crafting, do a house-project: put laundry away, then more fun: put clean dishes away, then more fun: vacuum one area, then one martini, you get the idea. Put on great music and get to work. It’s not so bad.

I notice I quantified my play time with “no particular finished project”. I believe if you are finishing a project, for ANY reason, then you are off the hook and need no justification, so there. So have fun, it is the weekend after all. love (and UFO’s)

you know why I didn’t post yesterday? I slept all day! HA! take that List Of Things To Do!

find peace

find peace

Find peace. Peace of mind: quiet children, sleepy pets, making the mortgage payment, enjoying the spring blossoms and their incredible scents, lovely soft clean sheets, recognition for the extra effort you put into a project, the soft lullaby of a gentle rain, the smell of towels right from the dryer, the beckoning colors of a fabric stash . Please let me know where you find your little moments of peace. myc

juicy, smelly, and wickedly delicious?

Juicy pears

When you eat summer pears, do you stand over the sink? That way, when the juice drips down your chin, you can contain the stickiness, and cleaning your face means reaching for the faucet.

When you peel a perfectly ripe orange in the winter, do you then place your fingertips in your nostrils and inhale that heavenly aroma? Then neglect washing your hands all day to repeat the inhale?

When you splurge (calories not $) on chocolate chocolate chip cake from the grocery bargain bin, do you drench the dry cake in rum? And then eat 1/3 of it in one sitting because nobody is watching? Tip: turn the cake upside down before applying the rum, it will be absorbed better that way. Not that I have any experience with this…

Take a flying…

decision made

Leap! Kickin’ it to California. We decided out of the blue to commit to vending at IQF in Long Beach, July, 2008. Since Chicago’s IQF, we’ve been sluggish and morose, (apologies to anyone reading my posts, it might have been obvious how blah I’ve been) now we’re hyped and creating anew. WhahHoo!

More upbeat news: Bubba’s working on purchase availability right though this site. And an awesome alternative to the photo albums that I am crazy about. Hope to have them up this week. (evil ploy, hee hee)

I’ve mentioned Lynn in a past post and just added her to my new Favorite Links on side bar. She is witty and entertaining and a blog of fresh air. Her blog has introduced me to Skulladay which I love, and she admits to a tote bag collection; I have yet to own up to my bag adiction. Lynn has inspired me to attempt more finished projects with our buttons, because hers are beautiful and have a calming effect on me. But trying to flesh out a thought process from my head is anything but calming to my nerves and maturity level.

Earthday green

green peppers, green day, earthday, earth wise

Earth day, but with minor effort, could be earth week, month, year, century. I am the proud new nurturer of 2 tiny little twig crabapples, that I will watch with unbridled glee, grow to be beautiful trees.

The above card may be an odd pick for today, (and it does look much better in living color) but I like the idea of seeing beauty in everyday nature. The way the light bounces off the curves of bell peppers, the smell of fingers having just peeled an orange, the splurge of a bowl full of lemons on the counter. Respect nature, revere our resources, appreciate and preserve. Love

permission to slow down

affirmation to slow yourself down

Many of us work 2 jobs in addition to care-taking, housekeeping, and creating or working on our craft. Why not hang up a little affirmation to allow yourself a wee luxury? Take your coffee back to bed. Soak in the bathtub till the water cools. Splurge on take-out. Sit and sip that hard earned martini without doing chores. You deserve it.

making music

how do you make music?

tickling the kids, cats purring, dogs sassing, paintbrush shushing on canvas, sewing needle in motion, sizzles from the wok, Joplin from the stereo. How do you make music? The soul needs it as much as the ear. Don’t forget to celebrate the magical qualities of the everyday, ordinary, music. Feed your soul.

Block Head

Block Head mini quilt

Sheesh, these girls are in such a hurry to get to Chicago, they haven’t sewn on my face yet. Kinda scary cause the cats can abscond with my eyeballs!  At least they gave me lush grass to await their administrations. But they’re giving me a posse this weekend. Lovely girls, grrrrrrr

Kiln opening April 1st

Kiln Opening April 1st, 2008

Caffeine, cowboys, saints, bingo, loteria cards, and assorted craziness coming out of the kiln. I’m hoping for 2 more batches before the Chicago International Quilt Show in less than 2 weeks. yikes, I’m getting nervous. But we have a great spot in the Make it University area, we’re surrounded by fabulous artists, and we are still having fun putting the mixed-media collage cards and quilts together. (plus a secret: I’m making eyeballs! hee hee - myc)

Thing and Thang twins with enchanted souls

Enchanted Souls

Introducing Thing and Thang. Twins that recently joined our cult of mixed media play. I was going to tie down their hair, but decided that their adopted parent should decide, but I had lots of fun playing beauty parlor with them (much more engaging than playing beauty parlor with Joey, my cat).

Chocolate mouthed plushy

chocolate mouthed plushy

Sometimes we need to depend on a visual to make us smile and remember the silly side of life. Sock creatures do this for me. This is my latest and we’ve taken to calling her chocitome. She is not allowed to have arms as it would lead to chocolate overdose. It takes longer to unwrap the chocolates by mouth only. So sad, but she’s happy, and so am I.

Time to get out the pretty clothes

snappy dresser

Admit it, we all feel better when we are dressed in our finest. Now that it is spring, treat yourself to a new hairdo, and a prettily colored outfit. It was a difficult winter, so celebrate spring, and let all who look upon your glory bask in your glow.
